(Date à préciser) Du vieil anglais hunig^[1]^[2], issu du proto-germanique *hunanga-^[3], *hunang- (« miel »)^[2], source aussi du vieux norrois hunang, suédois honung, vieux saxon honeg, vieux frison hunig, moyen néerlandais honich, néerlandais honig, vieux haut allemand honang, allemand Honig, etc.^[2]^[3]

La racine semble à rapprocher d’un étymon indo-européen *knh₂- (« jaune marronâtre, ambre »), à comparer avec le grec ancien κνῆκος, knêkos (« carthame des teinturiers »)^[3].
