The Sheppards

The Sheppards était un groupe américain de soul et de blues vocal basé à Chicago^[1]. Le groupe a été formé en 1959 par des membres des Ballads et des Bel Aires, et est resté actif jusqu’en 1969^[2].

Le groupe doit son nom au producteur Bill Sheppard^[3] et était composé de Millard Edwards (chanteur principal et basse), Jimmy Allen (baryton), James Dennis Isaac (basse et cinquième ténor), O. C. Perkins (deuxième ténor), Murrie Eskridge (chanteur principal et premier ténor), et Kermit Chandler (guitare).^[2] ^[4]Ils ont enregistré pour Vee-Jay Records et ont figuré sur des compilations telles que Tomorrow's Hits (1962).

Sheppard was getting some success on the successor group of the Bel Aires called the Sheppards, so Davis teamed up with him to form Pam Productions in 1961. The Sheppards are highly regarded today by those familiar with the group's music, but by and large they remain unknown to the vast majority of rhythm-and-blues fans. Their relative obscurity perhaps can be attributed to the fact that they were popular during the long-denigrated early- 1960s era of rock 'n' roll, when doowop was largely a memory and soul had a few years to go before it would make its impact.
