Opuntia galapageia est une espèce de plantes à fleurs de la famille des Cactaceae. Son aire de répartition naturelle se situe aux Galápagos où il est endémique. C'est un cactus succulent qui pousse principalement dans les biomes désertiques et arbustifs secs[1].

Opuntia galapageia est une espèce de cactus. Elle est endémique des îles Galápagos, en Équateur. Les formes présentes sur différentes îles ont été traitées comme des espèces et des sous-taxons distincts. Opuntia echios, Opuntia helleri, Opuntia insularis, Opuntia megasperma, Opuntia myriacantha et Opuntia saxicola sont désormais des synonymes de Opuntia galapageia.

Description

La variété Opuntia galapageia var. myriacantha, synonyme Opuntia galapageia var. echios, possède l'une des plus longues longueurs d'épines : jusqu'à 25 cm de longueur[2], dépassé uniquement par Ferocactus emoryi ssp. rectispinus à 33 cm[3],[4].

Taxonomie

Opuntia galapageia a été décrite pour la première fois par John Stevens Henslow en 1837. Elle a été enregistrée pour la première fois par Charles Darwin sur l'île de Santiago[5]. Darwin y séjourna neuf jours en 1835[6]. Par la suite, au moins cinq autres espèces d'Opuntia furent décrites aux Galápagos : Opuntia helleri, Opuntia insularis, Opuntia megasperma, Opuntia myriacantha et Opuntia saxicola. Toutes furent traitées par David Hunt en 2006 comme appartenant à O. galapageia, un classement accepté par la Liste rouge de l'UICN en 2017, bien qu'elles aient été évaluées comme espèces distinctes en 2000[7].Plants of the World Online accepte également le placement dans « O. galapageia » et inclut « Opuntia echios », plaçant dans la plupart des cas l'espèce dans un taxon infraspécifique (voir la liste ci-dessous).
