L'album a été certifié disque de platine aux États-Unis[7] et inclut le titre Real Love, qui a atteint la cinquième place du Billboard Hot 100[8]. One Step Closer est le dernier album studio du groupe avec Michael McDonald dans la formation jusqu'à l'album Southbound en 2014.
