Olivier Coipel

Olivier Coipel est un auteur de bande dessinée français, travaillant notamment pour les Studios DC Comics et Marvel Comics.

Olivier Coipel naît en 1973 dans le 12e arrondissement de Paris, près de nation.

Autour de ses 16 ans, il voyage au Portugal.

A l'issue de sa formation dans l'enseignement secondaire, il réussit le concours d'entrée à l'école de l’image des Gobelins^[1]. Diplômé au bout de deux ans, il sort de l'école major de promotion. Il est recruté par le studio d’animation Amblimation créé par Steven Spielberg^[2].

En 1994 qu’Olivier Coipel commence à Londres, puis à Los Angeles, sa vie d’animateur professionnel. Il travaille sur deux films de Dreamworks (Le Prince d'Égypte et La Route d'Eldorado) jusqu’à la fin des années 1990.

Aux Etats-Unis, il débute chez Wildstorm Productions^[3] sous la direction de Jim Lee. La maison de production devient une filiale de DC Comics. A San Diego, Copiel rencontre le directeur artistique de DC Comics^[4], et signe avec lui pour dessiner la Légion des Super-Héros (Legion of Super-Heroes.)^[2]. Après trois années passées au sein de la maison d'édition américaine, il rejoint Marvel.

Son travail sur la série des Vengeurs ("Avengers" en version originale) avec Geoff Johns, lui permet de se faire connaître chez les fans de comics. Il est ainsi révélé en 2004 dans la catégorie "Young Guns"^[5] aux côtés de jeunes artistes comme Jim Cheung et David Finch. Au cours des années 2000, il illustre plusieurs albums des X-Men et des Avengers^[6].

En 2005, il signe un contrat d'exclusivité avec Marvel^[5]. Au terme de sa collaboration sur la série Avengers, il est chargé de l'élaboration de l’événement comics de l'année : House of M^[7]. C’est sa participation à un événement d'ampleur qui permet a Olivier Coipel de se faire une place au sein des meilleurs artistes de comics Marvel. Il démontre une volonté d'élaboration d'identités visuelles inédites pour chacun de ses personnages^[8]. Après House of M, son grand projet est de dessiner The New Avengers Annual n^o 1.

À partir de juillet 2007, il travaille sur la nouvelle série Thor, éditée par Warren Simons, en collaboration avec J. Michael Straczynski^[9]. Coipel affectionne tout particulièrement ce personnage^[7] et il apporte à cette nouvelle série sa propre pâte graphique. La série ayant été clôturée auparavant, il obtient la liberté d'élaborer une nouvelle identité visuelle pour Thor, ainsi que les autres protagonistes de l'œuvre éponyme. Il illustre par la suite une mini-série événement centrée sur la série Thor et les Avengers (Thor & The Avengers). En 2010, il réalise Siege^[3], un crossover de bande dessinée Marvel, marquant l'apogée et la fin de l'ère Dark Reign (Règne des Ténèbres)^[10].

En 2011, il reprend l'illustration de Thor avec Matt Fraction au scénario.

En 2018, il s'associe avec le scénariste Mark Millar sur la série The Magic Order^[7][11]. En parallèle, il devient le dessinateur principal du crossover « Spider-Verse » l'univers des films d'animation Spider-Man: New Generation (2018), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) et le prochain Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (prévu en 2027), où Miles Morales rencontre différents Spider-Men à travers le multivers^[4].

En 2024, c'est lui qui signe l'affiche de l'exposition rétrospective Marvel : Super-Héros & Cie au musée de la BD à Angoulême, puis à Bruxelles. ^[12]

Les fans, comme les critiques, considèrent qu'il est devenu l'un des dessinateurs de comics les plus remarquables et influents aux Etats-Unis^[13].

The Magic Order, est une série originale Netflix sur un scénario de Mark Milar et l'illustration d'Olivier Coipel. Elle est basée sur le comics du même nom. Netflix a acheté les droits de la série en 2017 et avait commandé une série à James Wan et Lindsey Beer. La série est mise en pause en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19^[16]. En 2021, Netflix que la série « était de nouveau en développement actif »^[17] mais le tournage, prévu en novembre 2023, a de nouveau été reporté à cause de la grève des scénaristes^[18].
