Oliver Hardy, né le à Harlem dans l'État de Géorgie (États-Unis) et mort le à North Hollywood (Los Angeles), est un acteur de cinéma et chanteur américain. Il forme avec Stan Laurel le duo comique Laurel et Hardy.

Biographie

Avant sa carrière d'acteur

Oliver Norvell Hardy est né dans une famille nombreuse. À l'âge de 2 ans, Hardy perd son père, juriste d'origine anglaise, et sera élevé par sa mère Emilly Norvell qui, elle, a des racines écossaises[1]. Il suit une scolarité normale et se passionne pour le chant lyrique. Sa mère l'encourage, mais la perspective de devenir chanteur professionnel ne l'enchante guère. Il poursuit son cursus scolaire et décroche son diplôme d'avocat — profession qu'il n'exercera pas.

En 1910, Hardy découvre le cinéma, il ouvre dans la foulée une salle de cinéma. La nuit, « Babe » (surnom de Hardy) chante dans les cabarets.

Carrière d'acteur en solo

En 1919, Oliver Hardy rejoint les Studios de la Vitagraph Company of America où il va seconder Jimmy Aubrey dans ses comédies. Ce dernier est l'acteur phare du studio et tourne à un rythme effréné. En un peu plus d'un an, Babe (son nom de scène) joue à ses côtés dans près de 25 films, d'abord réalisés par Noel M. Smith, puis Jess Robbins lorsque le premier quitte la Vitagraph.

Il retrouve aussi Charley Chase, rencontré à la King-Bee et qu'il avait suivi à la L-KO.

C'est aussi à la Vitagraph qu'il rencontre Larry Semon écrit, réalise et joue ses propres comédies. Engagé comme scénariste puis réalisateur en 1916 à la Vitagraph, c'est lui qui à l'époque fait tourner Jimmy Aubrey. À partir de 1919, il ne tourne plus que ses propres films et donne souvent des rôles à Oliver Hardy, qui tiendra ainsi le rôle de « Tin Woodman » (le bûcheron en fer blanc) dans Le Sorcier d'Oz (The Wizard of Oz - 1925), une adaptation cinématographique long métrage du roman pour enfants Le Magicien d'Oz.

Carrière d'acteur avec Stan Laurel

C'est en 1919 qu'il tourne pour la première fois aux côtés de Stan Laurel. Le Veinard (The Lucky Dog), une comédie muette de Jess Robbins, un film d'essai en vue de réaliser une série de courts métrages dont Stan Laurel jouerait le rôle-titre, ne sera diffusé qu'en 1922[2]. Oliver Hardy y interprète un voleur qui, par méprise, se fait déposséder par Stan Laurel du fruit de son larcin et tente de se venger.

Vie personnelle

Oliver Hardy s'est marié à trois reprises :

  • avec Madelyn Saloshin du jusqu'en 1921
  • avec Myrtle Reeves (1897-1983) du jusqu'au
  • avec Virginie Lucille Jones (1909-1986) du jusqu'à son décès le .

Il n'a pas eu d'enfant.

Oliver Hardy était franc-maçon[3]. Il était membre du Salomon Lodge à Jacksonville en Floride.

Mort

Oliver Hardy subit une crise cardiaque légère en mai 1954. Il commence à prendre soin de sa santé pour la première fois de sa vie. Il perd plus de 68 kg en quelques mois, ce qui change complètement son apparence.

Il subit un grave accident vasculaire cérébral le 14 septembre 1956, ce qui le confine au lit et l'empêche de parler pendant plusieurs mois. Il reste à la maison sous la garde de son épouse Lucille.

Après avoir subi deux autres accidents vasculaires cérébraux au début du mois d'août 1957, il sombre dans le coma et meurt d'une thrombose cérébrale le 7. Il est inhumé au Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park and Mortuary à Los Angeles en Californie.
